A US company named Star Catcher announced it has wirelessly beamed 1.1 kilowatts of electricity from space to NASA Kennedy Space Center. The previous record was 800 watts. The nascent technology could one day provide solar energy to Earth and make space-based solar power possible.
The amount of electricity was modest — enough to run a typical hair dryer for about 11 minutes — but small-scale achievements like this are important steps in the technology development process. The company plans to deploy orbital power stations that collect sunlight 24/7 in space.
