Natural gas, moved and processed by the midstream sector, is the unsung hero of America’s decarbonization success. Based on data published by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, U.S. Energy Information Administration, and the Energy Institute, carbon dioxide emissions have steadily dropped over the past three decades while the nation’s GDP rose. In fact, GDP grew fivefold from 1990 to 2025, while emissions declined. This progress has continued despite shifts in political leadership and energy policy, suggesting it is not driven by consistent government action. The primary driver of this shift is the replacement of coal with natural gas in electricity generation, with renewables playing a supporting role.
Invisibility is no longer an option for the midstream industry. As a whole, we must step forward and claim our vital role in delivering cleaner, affordable, and reliable energy.
